But on this day, almost 43 years ago, the MGM Grand brought us one of the greatest hotel tragedies in the history of America. Eighty-seven people died as a result of this fire (many from inhaling the toxic smoke as it spread through the building) which spread all through the casino area and blew out the front entrance in a matter of minutes. A combination of poor construction on the building as well as a poorly planned out evacuation system led to mass chaos.
